I’ve been off Tumblr a few days because I felt I needed a break… mostly to watch Battlestar Galactica.
I’ve crossed over into season 4, and oh no, I love Gaius Baltar.
I hated his guts during season 1. I thought he was selfish, self-serving, egotistical, cowardly, arrogant, proud, a lech, a sleaze.
Now I adore Baltar. Why? Because he’s selfish, self-serving, egotistical, cowardly, arrogant, proud, a lech, a sleaze. He also desperately wants redemption, but he doesn’t know how to go about it. He’s the worst when he tries to do good, because when he TRIES he expects everyone to WATCH. He feels entitled to glory for his great works. When he truly acts in good faith he stumbles upon it, as if by accident. He’s capable of a surprising degree of self-sacrifice, but only when no one is watching. That’s what makes his character so fascinating, among other, more plot-specific/spoilery things.
The problem is I cannot pinpoint the exact moment my inner monologue changed from “Shut up, shut the fuck up,” to “DANG, why are you so great?”
When… did this happen…

All geeky posturing aside, this is an exciting new trend I’ve discovered in myself: my most loathed character eventually transforming into one of my favorites. Baltar is obviously one of these; another is Vriska. Now I am much looking forward to/ dreading falling in love with more awful characters. Yes.
